L'Aquila

Non siamo sull’Himalaya... ma a pochi chilometri da una città in cui ho abitato e ho lavorato, poco più di 70.000 abitanti... ma una vera città, un capoluogo di
regione, un tempo la città più a nord del Regno di Napoli.. sto parlando di L’Aquila, capitale dell’Abruzzo, città progettata e realizzata da Federico II, intorno al 1240, famosa per la sua università, il suo conservatorio, il teatro stabile... oltre che per la sede del governo regionale. Una città antica, assai ben conservata e abbellita da nuovi monumenti, uno di essi, la fontana luminosa, è rappresentato qui di seguito.

We are not on the Himalayas… but near a little city in which I have lived and worked, about 70.000 inhabitants… but one true city, a capital city of the region, till 1860 the more northern city of the Reign of Naples. I am speaking about L’Aquila, capital city of the Abruzzi, the city was planned and realized by Federico II, around 1240, famous for its university, its conservatory, the stable theatre… beyond that for the regional president's house. An ancient city, very well preserved and embellished with new monuments, one of them, luminous fountain, is represented here.

D’altra parte la città si trova a 714 m sul livello del mare ed è circondata dalle montagne. Dalla finestra della mia casa vedevo il Gran Sasso, la cui cima giunge a 2912 m.

On the other hand the city is at 714 m above sea level and is encircled by mountains. From the window of my house I used to see the Great Pebble, whose top reaches 2912 m.

La città è bella e antica ma le strade sono spesso in ripida pendenza come testimonia la foto:

The city is beautiful and ancient but the roads are often in steep slope like the photo shows:

in un salone di questo castello si conserva l’enorme scheletro di un Mammuth merisionalis... è quasi incredibile che allora potessero passeggiare per le campagne ove ora sorge l’Aquila bestioni di quelle dimensioni...

in one hall of this castle is conserved the enormous skeleton of a Mammuth merisionalis… it’s nearly incredible that then could walk around where now L’Aquila is built great animals of those dimensions…

L’Aquila sorge in un luogo molto ricco di acque, alla sua costruzione, secondo la tradizione presero parte 99 castelli della zona, ciascuno dei quali avrebbe voluto per sé una fontana e una chiesa in città. Esiste ancora la fontana delle 99 cannelle, un grande spazio quadrato chiuso da muri su tre lati, con 99 cannelle di acqua.

L’Aquila is situated in a place very rich one of water, to its construction, according to the tradition took part 99 castles of the zone, everyone of which would have for himself a single fountain and a specific church in city. Ma L’Aquila è famosa anche che per sue chiese... da una di esse, la basilica di Collemaggio, Papa Celestino V (unico Papa che si sia dimesso per tornare semplice monaco, secondo Dante “fece per viltade il gran rifiuto” ) emanò negli ultimi anni del 1200 la Perdonanza Celestiniana, un’anticipazione del Giubileo che il suo successore Bonifacio VIII indisse per la prima volta nel 1300. But L’Aquila is famous also that for its churches… from one of them, the basilica of Collemaggio, Pope Celestino V (the only Pope who resigned in order to return simple monk, according to Dante “he made for fear the great refusal”) emanated during the last few years of the 1200 the Celestinian Pardon, something similar to the Giubileo that his successor Bonifacio VIII celebrated in 1300. La facciata di san Bernardino fu realizzata da Cola dell’Amatrice modificando il progetto michelangiolesco della chiesa di san Lorenzo, mai realizzata, di cui resta un modello ligneo. Sarebbe stato lo stesso Michelangelo ad offrire il progetto a Cola dell’Amatrice.

The facade of saint Bernardino was realized from Cola of the Amatrice modifying the plan of Michelangelo for the church of saint Lorenzo, never realized, of which remains a wooden model. Was probably Michelangelo himself that offered his project to Cola of the Amatrice.
