MINIMAL ITALIAN GRAMMAR

JUST A LITTLE ITALIAN from level 0

For now just a little Italian 20% and 80% English.

You have to know first something boring but necessary.

In Italian vowels are very different from English.

In Italian

A
sounds always like in “Mark” ob “marble”, never like in “patriot”.

E
sounds always like in “better”, never like “before”.

I
sounds always like in “fish”, absolutely never like “sidecar”

O
sounds always like in “monster”, never like in “now”.

U
sounds always different from English… in English it sounds something similar "iu”, as it where double vowel, like in “use”, in Italian you have only “u”, like in France la ville de Toulouse or le superbe Bourgogne, U will never sound like “urgent”, never like “ugly”.

In Italian y and w don’t exist at all.

When you find two or more vowels you have to read each of them as a single vowel:

Example: (very terrible exercise for English people) aiuola (little peace of garden).

When a vowel is written you have to pronounce it also at the and of the word.

Consonants are something similar to English :

B,
sounds always like in “better”,

C
sounds in two different ways, like in “cat” (hard sound) or like in “chat” (soft sound)

C+A = hard, like in “cut” in italiano (tagliare)

C+E = soft, like in “chest” (body part)

C+I = soft, like in “cheep” the high weak cry made by young birds.

C+U = hard, like in “cube” but with Italian U.

In Italian we never use “ph” but always “f”, you have philosophy , we have filosofia.

G + vowel is similar to C + vowel

G + A = hard,

G + I = soft,

G + O = hard,

G + U = hard,

“H”
doesn’t sound at all, we call it the “dumb” we use “h” only when we have to pronounce C+ E or C + I with C hard and also when we have to pronounce G + E or G + I with G hard… do you remember… usually C+E, C+I, G+E, G+I are soft!

We use “uno” (indeterminativo) with a word that begins wiht “S”+consonant

We use “un” regularly with “S”+vowel



When the article “una” (only feminine) precedes a word beginning with a vowel “una” changes in “ un’ “ WITH THE - ‘ -. Nothing similar with masculine “uno”. Be careful “ un‘ ” with the - ‘ - is ONLY feminine “ un’ “ with masculine nouns is always a mistake! Many Italians use to do such a mistake.



Adjectives that in English don’t change at all, in Italian are different for the masculine, the feminine, the singular and the plural.


Bello = singular masculine: beautiful

Bella = singular feminine

Belli = plural masculine

Belle = plural feminine



Diverso, differente = different

Simile = similar

Caro = two different meanings 1) like “dear” (caro amico = dear friend) 2)
expensive

Avere = to have. The verb “avere” is also used to form verbs on the past, like in English:

Io mangio un panino (adesso) = I eat a sandwich (now).

Io (ieri) ho mangiato un panino = Yesterday I ate (have eaten) a sandwich.

(ho hai ha hanno [verb to have] always with “H”. “anno” without H means “year”, “a” without H means “to”: Vado a Roma = I go to Rome. Writing the verb AVERE (to have) third person plural or singular without H is a common mistake also for
Italian people.

The verb ESSERE uses the same verb essere and not AVERE to form the passato prossimo.

In English you say “I have been over there” in Italian never “io HO stato lì” but always “io SONO stato lì”. A lot of important verbs form the passato prossimo with AVERE and not with ESSERE and it is very difficult for English people to use correctly the two verbs.

Some examples:


Sono stato felice di vederti = I have been happy to see you

Ho mangiato una mela = I have eaten an apple

Sono uscito di mattina = I got out on the morning

Ho capito = I understood




Come congiunzione, like “and” in English, we use “e”.

Come congiunzione avversativa, like “but” in English, we use “ma”

Il termine cosa (plurale cose) corrisponde all’Inglese thig (things)

It would be simple but, in Italian, prepositions change when they are before an article… and for English speaking people, it’s usually difficult (at the beginning) to get used to this system.

Something to add about articles:

In Italian for masculine nouns we use non “il” but “lo” when after we have “s +
consonant” and use not “i” but “gli” on the plural.



Il giardino = the garden

Lo sciocco, lo stupido = the stupid



Allo stadio = to the stadium … a + lo = allo

Agli sciocchi, agli stupidi = to the stupid (plural) … a + gli = agli



Alla sorella = to the sister … a + la = alla

Alle sorelle = to the sisters … a + le = alle

“su” makes the articolate preposition the same way.



“con” produces “col = con + il” very common, but with the other articles don’t make a articolate prepositions

we use nevertheless collo=con+lo; colla=con+la; coi=con+i; colle=con+le.

“per” “tra” and “fra” don’t produce articulate prepositions

English “my” can be translated as “il mio” but in Italian we distinguish the asculine from the feminine and the singular form the plural, so we have: “il mio” (singular masculine), “la mia” (singular feminine), “i miei” (plural masculine, used also for mixed groups, like “parents” (a man and a woman)), “le mie” (plural
feminine, used for only feminine nouns like “scarpe” (shoes) or “calze” (soks).

Like for “my”, also for “your” (singular) we have four different expressions (il tuo, la tua, i tuoi, le tue), for “your” (plural) we have four different expressions (il vostro, la vostra, i vostri, le vostre).

In Italian for the third person (his, her) we don’t distinguish the masculine from the feminine and use only (il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue) (both for masculine and feminine).

For the fists person of the plural “our” we have “il nostro, la nostra, i nostri, le nostre”.

For the third person of the plural “their” we have “il loro, la loro, i loro, le loro”.

We don’t use different forms for the adjective (my book) and the pronoun (mine) and so on, we use the same forms for adjectives and pronouns: “il mio libro e il tuo”, “il nostro libro e il loro”, adjectives are followed by nouns, pronouns are used without nouns and this is enough to distinguish from each-other.

Usually we don’t express subject pronouns with the verbs, we usually don’t say “se tu vuoi noi possiamo stare qui” ma “se vuoi possiamo stare qui”. In Italian verbs are different for each person and the verb has the subject in itself, “vuoi” is the second person of the singular and the subject must be “tu”, “possiamo” is the first person of the plural and the subject must be “noi”… therefore we express the subject with the verbs only to remark or emphasize the verb, like in “tu puoi andare dove vuoi, ma noi resteremo in albergo” (you can go everywhere you like, but we’ll stay in hotel). In English verbs uses the same form for all
personas (except the third) therefore in English people use express subjects.

In Italian verbs are very complicated, there are three regular conjugations distinguished according to the “infinito”: amare (to love, to like), vedere (to see), capire (to understand), we say “are, ere, ire”. In Italian there are also a lot of irregular verbs used very frequently. We have also another very important “modo verbale” that in English doesn’t exist at all. It’s the “congiuntivo” used very frequently in dependent propositions. In English you have “I think you can tell me everything”, in Italian we don’t have “Credo che (“che” is used to introduce the dependant proposition) tu puoi (INDICATIVO) dirmi ogni cosa”, but we have “Credo che tu possa (CONGIUNTIVO) dirmi ogni cosa”.

You use to form the future with “will”, we, in Italian have special forms for the future, for example, in Italian “I’ll tell you everything”, sounds like: “Ti dirò ogni cosa”.

With the imperative (another mode of verb) the forms “mi, ti, ci, vi, ne” become enclitical

“dimmi (= dì [imperative] + mi) se (if) ci (to us) fornirai (future of the verb fornire (supply)) ogni cosa (everything)”.

Just another thing, in English you use only the verb to have like auxiliary, in Italian we use two different verbs (essere e avere , to be and to have).

In English you say “I have been in Italy” (you use to have like auxiliary), we in Italian say “Sono stato in Italia” because with the verb to be we use the same verb to be like auxiliary. The same way:

We say for the “passato prossimo” (past time but not remote) “io sono partito”, “tu sei uscito”, “noi siamo andati a Roma”. The verb to go = andare is very irregular:

verb to go = andare

I go = Io vado

You go = Tu vai

He/she goes = Egli/ella (lui, lei) va

We go = Noi andiamo

You go = Voi andate

They go = Essi vanno

ITALIAN VERBS

In Italian we have a “modo indicativo” for normal use in a principal proposition, now we focus on the first conjugation “-are” (amare, camminare [to walk], aspettare [wait for, in Italian is a transitive verb with no preposition “for”, we say “aspettare qualcuno” = wait for someone), cominciare = to start, ascoltare = to listen to, in Italian is a transitive verb: “ascoltare la radio” = listen to the radio.

To translate English –ing forms we use the present participle “-ndo” form. “I’m waiting for you” = “Ti sto aspettando”, we use the verb “stare” (sto, stai, sta, stiamo, state, stanno and not the verb to be “essere”).

In Italian “scusare” is a transitive verb… what does that mean? Very simple, a verb is transitive when has a direct complement (we call it complemento oggetto) “ I (subject) excuse my brother (direct complement [without preposition, in Italian prepositions are “di, a, da, in, con, su, per tra, fra").

Egli, ella, (lui, lei, less correct grammatically but in normal use) scusa suo fratello.

Something about “Io amo Italia molto!”. We usually, in Italian use different forms for the first, the second person of a verb and so on… that’s why we normally don’t use to express the subject before the verb, because the single verb form can support only a specific subject. Some examples:
Amo mia madre (the verb in first person … then it’s evident that the subject can be only “I”). Ami mia madre (the verb in second person… then it’s evident that the subject can be only “You”. In English they don’t use different forms for each person therefore they must express the subject in order to make comprehensible who makes the action.
We use adverbs (from Latin, literally near the verb) like molto, poco, bene, male, discretamente, decisamente and so “near the verb”. Nouns of countries like Italy, China, and so on, when used as direct complement must have the article.
The correct form to use is: “Amo molto l’Italia”.
The expression “ho voglia di” is very colloquial we use such expressions only in chatting… when we write we do prefer “desidero” or, better, a “conditional form of the verb” like “vorrei”, “mi piacetebbe”.
The correct form to use is: Mi piacerebbe abitare in Italia in futuro. When a single word (like “italiano”) can be used like noun (italiano= Italian language) and also like an adjective (Italian wine) we use the article to indicate the noun.
“e” and “è” are very different in Italian “e=and”, “è=is”. The correct form to use is “Ma l’Italiano è difficile per me” You have always to set the adjective to the corresponding noun and you also have to remember that the time complement is used with the article… (il prossimo anno=next year).
Laurearsi (reflexive form) means “to become doctor” (“doctor = academic title, not only for medical operators”), essere laureato (o laureata) means “to be a doctor”.

The correct form to use is: E’ il massimo. Perciò devo essere preparata il più presto possibile. We don’t use “computer sito” but “sito web” o semplicemente “sito”. Not “Apprezzo i tuoi sforzi molto” but “Apprezzo molto i tuoi sforzi (adverbs near the verb)”. Not “Anche mi piace la musica sul sito^_^” but “Mi piace anche la musica sul sito”, anche=also is never used at the beginning of a period.
With the word “internet”, English word, we don’t use the article. Correct form: Vuoi essere mio amico su internet?
We don’t use “esperienze di studiare” but “esperienze circa lo studio”.
